Our Extended Ryle - A Call to Prayer: - Conflict in Our Inner Man.

A cheetah housed in zoos that are too small for their created design… that is to run, jump, pursue, all with deft agility, become increasingly unhealthy.

Just so for the new creation of Christians. Whether exasperated struggles or long-term backsliding, J.C. Ryle encourages us to consider what part our lack of daily private prayer might play in our sad demeanor.

“It is a miserable thing to be a backslider. Of all unhappy things that can befall a man, I suppose it is the worst. A stranded ship, a broken-winged eagle, a garden overrun with weeds, a harp without strings, a church in ruins, all these are sad sights, but a backslider is a sadder sight still. A wounded conscience—a mind sick of itself—a memory full of self-reproach—a heart pierced through with the Lord’s arrows -a spirit broken with a load of inward accusation—all this is a taste of hell. It is a hell on earth. Truly that saying of the wise man is solemn and weighty, “The backslider in heart shall be filled with his own ways” (Prov. 14:14).”

J.C. Ryle - A Call to Prayer

Psalm 32:3-6

3 When I kept silent about my sin, my body wasted away Through my groaning all day long. 4 For day and night Thy hand was heavy upon me; My vitality was drained away as with the fever heat of summer. Selah. 5 I acknowledged my sin to Thee, And my iniquity I did not hide; I said, “I will confess my transgressions to the LORD”; And Thou didst forgive the guilt of my sin. Selah. 6 Therefore, let everyone who is godly pray to Thee ain a time when Thou mayest be found; Surely in a flood of great waters they shall not reach him.

Let us consider our groaning and troubles and draw near to us, seeking His power and comfort. Experiencing eternal life is fulfilling our purpose of community with Father, Son, and Holy Ghost even as we await glory.
