October Surprise - October Twelfth - Samuel Rutherford: Rejoice; God Uses Affliction to Make Us a Sweet Aroma.

I never knew how weak I was till now, when He hidest Himself, and when I have Him to seek seven times a day. I am a dry and withered branch and a piece of dead carcass, dry bones, and not able to step over a straw. The thoughts of my old sins are as the summons of death to me, and of late, my brother’s case hath stricken me to the heart.

A more tender soul you will never read about, nor will we meet in our heavenly home. What made Samuel Rutherford such a sweet, compassionate soul? He was afflicted in an age of affliction when there was hardly any other available balm for the soul than to seek the Lord, even though He felt afar off, seven times a day.

What more can we say?

And since He bids me seek His face,

Believe His Word and trust His grace,

I'll cast on Him my every care,

And wait for thee, sweet hour of prayer!"
