J.C. Ryle warns us:
If I do not mean what I say, I am trifling with God.
The Bishop's admonishment is one of the pillars of our relationship with the Holy God. He has already reminded us we are on Holy ground, and now he warns us to mean what we say.
We know with one another that we are in the most trouble when we say things we do not mean to our community.
I will take out the garbage.
I will run that errand.
I will pray for you.
It is silly to think we can hide things from God, yet we are so habitual in hiding things from each other that we often try with the Almighty.
In our quest for a closer and closer relationship with the God who reveals Himself in His word, we forget:
Hebrews 4:12-13
"For the word of God is living and active and sharper than any two-edged sword, and piercing as far as the division of soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart. 13 And there is no creature hidden from His sight, but all things are open and laid bare to the eyes of Him with whom we have to do."
"O Lord, Thou hast searched me and known me. Thou dost know when I sit down and when I rise up; Thou dost understand my thought from afar. Thou dost scrutinize my path and my lying down, And art intimately acquainted with all my ways. Even before there is a word on my tongue, Behold, O LORD, Thou dost know it all."
Psalm 139:1-4
He knows who we are, and He saved us. He wants us to trust Him and pour out our hearts to Him by faith.
We demonstrate our faith and trust when we do not try to trifle with the God to whom we are open and laid bare and who knows our thoughts from afar.
Glory to God for your limitless mercies, for I, indeed, try those limits.
"What a man is on his knees before God, that he is and nothing more."
