October Surprise 2022: "A Call to Prayer." Day 17

October Surprise 2022:

October 17, 2022 - Inspired by J.C. Ryle's treatise on Prayer.

We truncated our introduction for the last half of our October episodes. Our shorter introduction ends at the 3:18 mark if you would like to skip to that mark. This way, you have less to wade through.

Our current mentor, J.C. Ryle, wrote:

"And I say, furthermore, that of all the evidences of the real work of the Spirit, a habit of hearty private prayer is one of the most satisfactory that can be named.

A man may preach from false motives. A man may write books and make fine speeches and seem diligent in good works, and yet be a Judas Iscariot. But a man seldom goes into his closet, and pours out his soul before God in secret, unless he is in earnest. The Lord himself has set his stamp on prayer as the best proof of a true conversion. When he sent Ananias to Saul in Damascus, he gave him no other evidence of his change of heart than this, "Behold, he prayeth" (Acts 9:11)."

Day 17 reminds us we have a kinship with Almighty God through His mercies, grace, and blood shed on our behalf.

The Holy Ghost is our assurance of our family,

Romans 9:9

9 However, you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you. you. But if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Him.

We are not left, orphans.

John 14:17-18

…that is the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it does not behold Him or know Him, but you know Him because He abides with you, and will be in you. 18 "I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you.

Our prayers are the call of a beloved child.

Romans 8:14-15

For all who are being led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God. 15 For you have not received a spirit of slavery leading to fear again, but you have received a spirit of adoption as sons by which we cry out, "Abba! Father!" 16 The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God,

To be not in prayer is to quench the Holy Ghost.

1 Thessalonians 5:16-20

Rejoice always; 17pray without ceasing; 18 in everything give thanks; for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus. 19 Do not quench the Spirit; 20 do not despise prophetic utterances.

“What a man is on his knees before God, that he is and nothing more.”
