Dear Christian:
To use a word common today, the content of all Jesus’ teaching is to our hearts. We can keep all the rules for the wrong reasons. We may keep them strictly from fear, keep them strictly from pride, keep them to impress others, and as even real children of God, our reward is what we have sought, the honor of other men.
Jesus, however, is aiming at our hearts. In prayer, this is most certainly true. He wants authentic communication from His children. When we come to Him, we aim at sincere communion with the Holy God of the universe.
In pursuit of that communion, our Father is not adding up our words, our eloquence curries no favor with Him, neither does He listen for keywords, secret codes, or magic phrases. Sincere prayer is from the heart, which He knows, expressed the best way we can, which He also knows.
The sincere Christian heart expresses its need trusting the Father who is and who knows, and it is assured our Father of lights answers with only what is right from above. For our sound, eternal good, and His glory.
O taste and see that the LORD is good; How blessed is the man who takes refuge in Him! Psalm 34:8
