Jesus Teaches Prayer: Vain Repetition

Jesus Teaches Prayer: Vain Repetition

He knows what we need.

Matthew 6:7-9

7 “And when you are praying, do not use meaningless repetition, as the Gentiles do, for they suppose that they will be heard for their many words. 8 “Therefore do not be like them; for your Father knows what you need, before you ask Him. 9 “Pray, then, in this way:

I have always wondered why as Jesus was talking about vain repetition, He slides in, “Therefore, do not be like them; for your Father knows what you need before you ask Him.”

Jesus is reminding us, we are not calling out in manipulative repetition, to a god made in our own likeness, aloof, uncaring save that which appeases our ever-changing moods, and He is not a force which can be mechanically moved to good or evil with formulaic mantras repeated over and over again.

We are coming to Holy God, Jesus who is the Christ, the Spirit who dwells within us, who has told us

Lamentations 2:19

19 “Arise, cry aloud in the night At the beginning of the night watches; Pour out your heart like water Before the presence of the Lord;”

Our new inner man longs to call out to God, with sincerity, I exhort you; do it!
