Back to Jesus teaches prayer from the Sermon on the Mount and The Lord's Prayer.
Not Really the Lord's prayer as in we mindlessly repeat words. God is never moved by a formula or man's pious repetition of His Son our Savior's words.
This passage,
Matthew 6:9-13
"Pray, then, in this way: 'Our Father who art in heaven, Hallowed be Thy name. 10 'Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, On earth as it is in heaven. 11 'Give us this day our daily bread. 12 'And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. 13 'And do not lead us into temptation, but deliver us from evil. [For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.]',
contains the principles of prayer Jesus Himself employed during His earthy stay to pay for our redemption.
The passage is filled with meaning and implication beyond what we readily see.
Give us our daily bread reminds us of our reliance on Him alone for what we need. He is speaking not just of our daily requirement of food, which He is about to promise, when teaching we are not to worry, but to
Matthew 6:33
"But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness; and all these things shall be added to you."
Our commitment to God's will to supply everything we need, and to supply it in perfect measure tailored to what is best for us in the purpose of God, can best be seen from GOd's word:
Job 31
24 "If I have put my confidence in gold, And called fine gold my trust, 25 If I have gloated because my wealth was great, And because my hand had secured so much; 26 If I have looked at the sun when it shone, Or the moon going in splendor, 27 And my heart became secretly enticed, And my hand threw a kiss from my mouth, 28 That too would have been an iniquity calling for judgment, For I would have denied God above.
and…
Proverbs 30:7-9
Two things I asked of Thee, Do not refuse me before I die: 8 Keep deception and lies far from me, Give me neither poverty nor riches; Feed me with the food that is my portion, 9 Lest I be full and deny Thee and say, "Who is the LORD?" Or lest I be in want and steal, And profane the name of my God.
The end of our request, "give us this day," is our complete contentment in His supply. Some have said pie in the sky, but next time we will briefly visit George Muller's life and see by faith this life is not only possible in our fallen world but has been done.
