Jesus Teaches Prayer - Blessing Meals 2

Jesus Teaches Prayer - Blessing Meals 2

Category - Exhortation

We will see how and where I learned to say blessings before meals, why I avoided those prayers as much as possible, and why I felt like a hypocrite saying grace 95% of the time.

Contemplating prayer before meals and exactly what that entailed, I came to the conviction that I broke every principle of prayer.

What did Jesus say when He blessed the meals? There is a Jewish tradition, a formula for blessing meals.

Acknowledging Baruch Atah Adonai (God who is ever blessed, and ever blessing His creation.)

I was not able to find if Jesus Jesus spoke these words verbatim in His blessing, but I do know that even if He did, He did not do it with an empty rote; his words were not vaporous. He did not speak them just because other people were around. Or because of tradition. His words were from His whole heart following His close communion with the Father.

Jesus did use vain repetition, mindlessness, or words. At this moment, He spoke with His whole heart. Jesus called out to the Father. His thankfulness was genuine and sincere. At that moment, He knew He was about to experience the power of the Father and the Holy Ghost in creating enough bread and fish to feed as many as 10,000 souls.

In this case, they were about to see a miracle where there had been 10,000 needy people with no resources, no hope of resources, and no disciple knew how to feed them. Afterward, when he was done, 10,000 satisfied people were satisfied because the glory of Almighty God and His compassion was on full display.

Unlike my empty words, Jesus proclaimed the blessed character of Holy God in transparency. And then, in His deep appreciation, He revealed the glory of God, the giver of all good things.

Beloved of the Father, whatever traditions we may have across the world, our desire is to fill those traditions with the praise and honor our Creator, Savior, and Sustainer deserves.

At the end of the episode, enjoy “Love Lifted Me” from “Hymns” by Chad Marvin and Johanna Chapman.

And since He bids me seek His face,

Believe His Word and trust His grace,

I'll cast on Him my every care,

And wait for thee, sweet hour of prayer!"
