Jesus Teaches Prayer: Ask, Seek, Knock - A Call to Prayer

Jesus Teaches Prayer: Ask, Seek, Knock - A Call to Prayer

As we have explored Matthew 7:7-12, probing for the correct interpretation, we have seen:

The passage is not an appeal solely to salvation.

Verses 7-11 are not simple illustrations of verse 12.

They are a mandate to pray and to continue on beseeching until our souls are satisfied, perceiving the Father’s answer.

Respecting the highest commandment:

Mark 12:29-31

Jesus answered, “The foremost is, ‘HEAR, O ISRAEL! THE LORD OUR GOD IS ONE LORD; 30 AND YOU SHALL LOVE THE LORD YOUR GOD WITH ALL YOUR HEART, AND WITH ALL YOUR SOUL, AND WITH ALL YOUR MIND, AND WITH ALL YOUR STRENGTH.’ 31 “The second is this, ‘YOU SHALL LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF.’ There is no other commandment greater than these.”

We find two noble applications in the Sermon on the Mount to govern us in our appeals:

Our God focus:

“But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness; and all these things shall be added to you.

Matthew 6:33

We dedicate:

‘Our Father who art in heaven, Hallowed be Thy name. 10 ‘Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, On earth as it is in heaven. 11 ‘Give us this day our daily bread. 12 ‘And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. 13 ‘And do not lead us into temptation, but deliver us from evil. [For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.]’

Our neighbor’s focus:

12 “Therefore, however you want people to treat you, so treat them, for this is the Law and the Prophets.

Matthew 7:11

We supplicate:

For all men, I pray 7 “Ask, and it shall be given to you; seek, and you shall find; knock, and it shall be opened to you. 8 “For everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it shall be opened.

Matthew 7:7-8

Conviction:

“They (verses 7:7-11) are an excellent application of verse 12. While we are praying, expecting God’s mercies and his gracious, abundant gifts, we need to be praying the same for everyone because, again, we are not like the Pharisee thinking that we are better than everyone else. We’re like the Publican, who just cries out, Lord, have mercy upon me, a sinner. And as we pray, beating our breasts, not even looking up in humility, we understand that we have no place to judge others and pray for them any other way than Lord Jesus ‘do what’s best for them. Give them the mercies you’ve given me. Give them the grace you’ve given me. Give them the abundant life you’ve given me because I don’t deserve it either.’”

May it be so in His church to His glory.

And since He bids me seek His face,

Believe His Word and trust His grace,

I'll cast on Him my every care,

And wait for thee, sweet hour of prayer!"
