The Apostle Paul was distressed, buffeted by Satan. Evidently, Paul's practice of buffeting his body was insufficient to keep him humble.
Paul prayed three times for relief from the thorn in his flesh, and when the answer came back, (no) My grace is sufficient for you, Paul's response was:
"And He has said to me, "My grace is sufficient for you, for power is perfected in weakness." Most gladly, therefore, I will rather boast about my weaknesses, that the power of Christ may dwell in me. 10 Therefore, I am well content with weaknesses, with insults, with distresses, with persecutions, with difficulties, for Christ's sake; for when I am weak, then I am strong."
2 Corinthians 12:9-10
When God tells us no, there is a reason. All that He does in our lives, including answering our prayers, is to accomplish this one thing:
"For whom He foreknew, He also predestined to become conformed to the image of His Son, that He might be the first-born among many brethren;"
"And we know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose. 29 For whom He foreknew, He also predestined to become conformed to the image of His Son, that He might be the first-born among many brethren; 30 and whom He predestined, these He also called; and whom He called, these He also justified; and whom He justified, these He also glorified."
Romans 8:28-30
Conformity to Jesus comes through humility. Therefore, when He says no, our praise, adoration, and thanksgiving are just as enthusiastic as when we get what we pray for.
"What a man is on his knees before God, that he is and nothing more."
