There is none righteous, no not one. So says the word of God.
We do God a dishonor and ourselves a disservice when we look upon our great cloud of witnesses, minimize their sins while over-inflating their earthly life with righteous deeds born from their flesh.
We know from our own hurts and pains the depths of sorrow born of our circumstances, the depths of Jacob's fear and brokenness.
We then understand Jacob when he says:
And their father Jacob said to them, "You have bereaved me of my children: Joseph is no more, and Simeon is no more, and you would take Benjamin; all these things are against me." Genesis 42:36
Holy brethren called by God, Joseph was not really dead, despite evidence to the contrary.
Simeon was not dead, even though Jacob was fearful in the present report.
Finally, there was laid up for Benjamin a glorious reunion with his brother, the elder son of his mother, who he also deemed dead.
I know you are hurting, I know you are confused, I know you wonder why your God seems to stand afar off.
He is not!
In my weakness, born of the mercies of God to this unworthy slave, schooled by the short-sighted Jacob, we pray together in this episode.
Confessing by faith, our knowledge of God's eternal lovingkindness, that past is not as bad as we think, He has done a mighty work, the present is not as bleak as it seems, because He is in heaven carrying out His plan of redemption and sanctification, and the future has laid up for us an eternal weight of glory we cannot now comprehend.
Glory to God in the highest.
